Grey granite paving slabs

Granite paving slabs — pedestrian or driveable

The grey granite paving slab is the most durable way to lay a patio, a drive or a courtyard in natural stone. Quarried and sawn in our own quarry in Portugal, it is solid stone — not a bonded tile or a reconstituted concrete slab — dense, frost-proof and non-slip. You buy direct from the producer: the delivered price is the final price to your door, with no middleman and no carriage charges tacked on at the end. Slabs are sold by the square metre and come in two thicknesses to suit the use.

In 2 cm thickness, the slab is pedestrian: it dresses patios, poolsides and garden paths. Bonded onto a stabilised concrete screed, it gives a flat, even surface that is easy to look after. In 3 cm thickness, the same grey granite slab becomes driveable: laid on a suitable foundation, it takes regular vehicle traffic and so suits garage drives, courtyards and access ways. Same dense grey granite, same frost resistance, same delivery across Europe — only the thickness, and therefore the load-bearing capacity, changes.

Why choose granite over another material

Portuguese granite brings together quality, good looks and a competitive price. It is a very hard igneous rock, with a compressive strength above 2,180 kg/cm² and water absorption below 0.2%. In plain terms, a granite slab will not crack in the frost, will not distort in the heat and does not stain easily. Where a concrete slab greys, grows moss and crumbles after a few winters, granite paving holds its looks for decades. By buying direct from the quarry, you pay for the stone, not the chain of resellers: that is what lets us quote a producer's price, delivery included.

Choosing the right thickness

The rule is simple: 2 cm for anything pedestrian (patios, garden paths, poolsides), 3 cm as soon as a vehicle crosses it (garage entrance, driveable courtyard, access). If in doubt — say a mixed path that a car uses now and then — we would suggest going for the 3 cm, which is the safer choice. Just tell us the intended use on the quote form and we will confirm the thickness with you.

Laying patterns

Laying patterns for granite paving slabs

Eight classic patterns, from the simplest to the most decorative — each shown with its setting-out diagram.

Straight (stack bond)

Slabs aligned to a string line: the cleanest, most contemporary look and the most common lay.

Diagonal

At 45° from a corner: it energises the space and makes a small terrace feel larger.

Opus / Versailles

Slabs of several sizes assembled to a repeating pattern: the timeless elegance of French-style paving.

Half-bond

A regular half offset from one row to the next, for a structured, rhythmic pattern.

Chequerboard

Two shades alternated (light grey / flecked grey) in a chequerboard, for a graphic surface.

Zig-zag (chevron)

Slabs laid point to point: a bold decorative pattern, ideal along a path.

Staggered joints

Each row offset like a brick bond: robust, understated and easy to lay.

Random lengths

Fixed-width courses of varying lengths (opus incertum): a natural, bespoke finish.

Laying guide

How to lay granite paving slabs, step by step

The method depends on the thickness and the use. Here are the main principles; if in doubt, call in a paviour or ask us for advice on the quote form.

1. The foundation

For a 3 cm driveable slab, prepare a free-draining foundation: dig out, lay a geotextile then a compacted hardcore bed, and finally a bed of stabilised sand. Laying on adjustable pedestals is also an option on a terrace. For a 2 cm pedestrian slab, form a stabilised concrete screed that is perfectly level: the slab is bonded down with an exterior tile adhesive.

2. The fall

Always allow a slight fall of 1 to 2% (that is 1 to 2 cm per metre) away from walls, to shed rainwater and avoid standing water.

3. The joints

Fill the joints with jointing mortar for a driveable surface, or with stabilised sand for a free-draining path. A width of 5 to 10 mm is enough; stagger the joints to strengthen the whole.

4. Cutting

Cut the slab with an angle grinder or a saw fitted with a diamond blade, wetting to keep the dust down. Wear goggles and protective gear. A light chamfer on the edges prevents spalling.

Maintenance

A paving that asks for almost nothing

Rinse with water

A simple jet of clean water, and if needed a neutral soap, is all it takes to clean the slab. Avoid strong acids.

No sealing required

Granite is naturally low in porosity: no sealer is essential. A treatment remains an option for areas very exposed to staining.

Frost-proof

Solid stone with low absorption (0.2%), tested to standard EN 12371: it holds up anywhere in the UK and Europe, even in the uplands.

Non-slip

In a flamed or bush-hammered finish, the surface stays safe even when wet, around a pool as on a path.

Uses

Where to lay granite paving slabs

From a patio to a driveable drive, by way of the poolside.

Patio & terrace

The 2 cm sawn slab makes a flat, warm and lasting terrace, pleasant underfoot and easy to look after.

Garden path

A pedestrian path in 2 cm, or a driveable drive in 3 cm up to the garage: granite takes the traffic without wearing.

Poolside & coping

A flamed non-slip finish for the pool surround, with matching coping: safety and elegance around the water.

Walkway

Stepping stones or regular paving to structure the garden and guide the step up to the door.

Courtyard

A courtyard in 3 cm driveable slabs, clean and stable, that adds lasting value to the frontage and entrance.

Drive & garage entrance

The 3 cm slab laid on a free-draining foundation carries the weight of vehicles without cracking.

Concrete vs granite

The paving that truly lasts

Concrete costs less to lay… then greys, grows moss and cracks after a few winters. Granite paving, by contrast, sails through the decades without moving.
