Portuguese granite setts

Granite setts — solid stone, direct from the producer

The granite sett is the most durable way to surface a driveway, a courtyard or a patio in natural stone. Quarried and worked in our own quarry in Portugal, our Portuguese granite setts are solid stone — not a concrete block or a reconstituted paver — dense, frost-proof and naturally non-slip. You buy direct from the producer: the delivered price is the final price to your door, with no middleman and no carriage charges tacked on at the end. Setts are sold by the square metre and come in a range of sizes and colours to suit your project.

Portuguese granite setts, or granite cobbles, built the reputation of Europe's streets and squares: this is a very hard igneous stone, with a compressive strength above 2,180 kg/cm² and water absorption below 0.2%. In plain terms, a granite sett will not crack in the frost, will not distort in the heat and does not stain easily. Where a concrete paver greys, grows moss and crumbles after a few winters, granite setts hold their looks for decades. It is an investment you pass on, not a surface you re-lay.

Why buy direct from the quarry

By coming to our quarry rather than through a chain of resellers, you pay for the stone and the transport — nothing else. No merchant's mark-up, no middle platform. That is what lets us quote a producer's price, delivery included, on Portuguese granite setts of consistent quality, cut by our own teams. Grey is the most versatile and the most sought-after; yellow, pink and black round out the range for projects that want to stand apart.

Colours & performance

Granite sett colours and durability

Grey, yellow, pink and black — a dense, non-slip, frost-proof stone.

Grey Portuguese granite setts

Grey

The most versatile: a neutral, understated finish, ideal for driveways and courtyards.

Yellow Portuguese granite setts

Yellow

Our signature stone and the most requested. Warm and full of light.

Porrinho pink Portuguese granite setts

Porrinho pink

A porphyritic grain, flecked pink. Compressive strength 2,180 kg/cm², absorption 0.2%.

Black Portuguese granite setts

Black

Rare and refined, for high-end and contemporary schemes.

Dense granite

Solid stone with high compressive strength (> 2,180 kg/cm²): the sett does not crush and takes traffic without distorting.

Non-slip

The split face gives a natural grip, even when wet: safe around a pool or on a sloping drive.

Frost-proof

Water absorption of 0.2%, frost-tested to standard EN 12371: it holds up anywhere in the UK and Europe, even in the uplands.

Sizes & formats

Granite sett sizes and formats

From 5×5 to 10×10 cm, in sawn (calibrated) or split (riven) setts.

Laying patterns

Laying patterns for granite setts

Six classic patterns, from the simplest to the most decorative — each shown with a real project.

Granite setts laid in straight coursed rows with aligned joints

Coursed rows

Rows laid to a string line: the simplest and cleanest pattern, ideal for a contemporary finish.

Granite setts laid with offset joints, cobbled-street style

Offset (staggered) joints

The classic cobbled-street bond: joints are staggered from one row to the next, for a robust, timeless surface.

Black granite setts laid diagonally at 45 degrees

Diagonal

Setts laid at 45° to the edges: a dynamic finish that makes the space feel larger.

Granite setts laid in a segmental arc, arched courses

Segmental arc (arched courses)

Radial laying in successive arcs: a neat curved effect, one for experienced layers.

Granite setts laid in a fantail, peacock-tail pattern

Fantail (peacock tail)

The quintessential European pattern: fans radiating out, wonderfully decorative over large areas.

Granite sett rosette on a square, star motif

Rosette & bespoke motifs

Made-to-measure patterns and designs — rosette, star, crest: for a square or an entrance that is truly one of a kind.

Technical setting-out diagram for laying granite setts in a segmental arc, with dimensions

Unsure about the pattern? The segmental arc and fantail patterns call for accurate setting-out (radius, up- and down-course). Tell us your pattern on the quote form and we will advise on the sett size and layout best suited to your area.

Finishes

Granite sett finishes

Split, sawn, bush-hammered or polished — to suit the look and the grip you are after.

Granite sett with a split, riven natural face

Split (riven)

A natural split face, non-slip — the raw, authentic look of the traditional sett.

Sawn granite sett with regular, calibrated faces

Sawn

Regular sawn faces (calibrated setts) for neat coursing and fine joints: a contemporary finish.

Bush-hammered granite sett with a pitted surface

Bush-hammered

A surface textured with the hammer: extra grip, even when wet, and a matt, high-end finish.

Polished granite sett with a smooth, glossy surface

Polished

A smooth, glossy surface that brings out the grain and colour of the stone — best kept decorative and sheltered.

Laying guide

How to lay granite setts, step by step

The method depends on the use and the traffic you expect. Here are the main principles; if in doubt, call in a paviour or ask us for advice on the quote form.

1. The laying bed

For a path or a pedestrian route, lay the setts on a bed of stabilised sand (sand plus a little cement), 3 to 5 cm deep, over a free-draining compacted sub-base. For a driveway, use a mortar bed over a slab or a load-bearing foundation, so it can take the weight of vehicles without movement.

2. Laying and falls

Set up a string line, lay the setts to your chosen pattern (coursed, diagonal, fantail…) and tap each sett home with a rubber mallet to bed it in. Always allow a fall of 1 to 2% (1 to 2 cm per metre) away from walls to shed rainwater.

3. The joints

Fill the joints with stabilised sand for a free-draining route, or with driveable mortar for a surface that takes vehicles. A joint width of 8 to 15 mm is recommended depending on the size; stagger the joints to strengthen the whole, then brush in and compact.

4. Cutting

Cut edge setts with an angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade, wetting to keep the dust down, or with a hammer and bolster to keep a split edge. Wear goggles, gloves and ear protection.

Maintenance

A paving that asks for almost nothing

Simple cleaning

A rinse with clean water, and if needed a neutral soap or a low-pressure washer, is all it takes. Avoid strong acids, which attack the joints.

No sealing required

Granite is naturally low in porosity: no sealer is essential. A treatment remains an option for areas very exposed to staining.

Frost-proof

Solid stone with low absorption (0.2%), tested to standard EN 12371: the sett does not crumble in the frost, winter after winter.

Weeds

Well-compacted, sand-filled joints limit growth; hot-water or mechanical weeding is enough to keep them tidy.

Uses

Where to lay granite setts

From a driveway to a poolside, by way of the public highway.

Driveway

Laid on mortar, the 10×10 sett carries cars: a garage entrance and access drive that last.

Courtyard

A clean, stable setted courtyard that adds lasting value to the frontage and stands up to daily traffic.

Patio

Split or sawn setts for a patio with a mineral charm — warm and easy to look after.

Poolside

The non-slip split face makes the edge of the pool safer, with a natural look around the water.

Garden path

A 6×6 or 9×9 path to guide the step and structure the garden right up to the door.

Highways & public realm

At 10×10×6, granite setts take the heavy traffic of streets, squares and pedestrian areas.

Concrete vs granite

The paving that truly lasts

Concrete blocks or reconstituted stone cost less to lay… then grey, grow moss and crack after a few winters. Granite setts, by contrast, sail through the decades without moving.
